RND 6 VIRGINIA MOTORSPORTS PARK (GP) Race Report by Mario Orsini

Finish Lines and Good Times!

Coming into the 6th and final round of the Sprint Cross Country Series (SXCS) at Virginia Motorsports Park there were quite a few championships left to be decided. Before the racing began on Sunday, there was a slew of events hosted on Saturday November 14th. The “Fun Day” sponsored by Law Tigers of VA included a trail ride from 11:00-3:00 pm as well as a Swap Meet and Food Drive; thanks to all those who donated!

Dirtbike Girl Adventures hosted a #MotoCurious Women’s Meet & Greet and T-Bone and Earl’s Cycle had Stacyc demos available for the kids.

SXCS – Dirt Bike Girl Adventures #MOTOCURIOUS Womens Meet & Greet heads out on the course before the Trail Ride gets underway.

While the sun was setting at 4:00 pm the event was just heating up as the 2020 SXCS Chili Cook-off got underway. With 9 entrants and no rules, the selections were quite interesting. There was one chili with sides of cinnamon rolls and grilled cheese, one with baggie packaged garnishes and some with cornbread. Judges scored the chili on their presentation, consistency, “bang factor,” and overall taste. With the scores totaled and re-totaled (just to be sure), it was the chili of Kyla Dalmasso that won the 2020 SXCS Chili Cook-off with her delicious “Smoked Pork Verde Chili” with Richie Brooks in 2nd and tied for 3rd Amy Nash and Nancy Schlag.

Thank You to Law Tigers of Virginia for the SWAG!

Sunday morning came early with a first race start time of 7:00am. The final round of SXCS was a GP format meaning each class would run 2 (20-30 min) motos on a track consisting of both motocross and woods layout. Overall winners would be awarded by finish, not time. The GP format allows racers to run multiple classes with some racers running up to 3 classes during the course of the day. The first moto of the day was Super Mini Sr, Super Mini Jr and 85 Jr. Robert Weiss had a strong first moto finishing first, with Austin Tsakanikas second and Ryder Sigety (85 JR) third. In the second moto Austin battled hard but came up 6 seconds short with Robert Weiss winning moto 2 and the combined results with Austin second. Mason Tsakanikas (85 JR) and Ryder Sigety were never separated by more than 2 seconds in the second moto which Mason ended up winning by just one second as well as the 85 JR combined for the day. Harvey Bull finished 3rd in the combined moto results and first in Supermini Sr.

The next set of motos included Trail Bike, 65cc novice and our 50cc riders. With riders age 4-11 this moto has kids all sizes and skill levels competing on the track at the same time. Nathaniel Oswald competing in the trail bike class was the first to see the checkered but Colt Chaney and Landyn Dalmasso both of the 50 SR class were the fastest overall finishing 1st and 2nd respectively with Oswald 3rd overall. There was plenty of excitement in the 2nd moto as Landyn Dalmasso and Colt Chaney battled it out. Dalmasso had just a one second lead each time they passed on the first 2 laps. Colt edged Landyn by less than a bike length to take the moto win and the combined win. Landyn however did enough to secure the 2020 SXCS 50 SR Championship. Nathaniel Oswald was 3rd across the line finishing first in Trail Bike for the day. Aubrey Tsakanikas won both 50 JR motos and the 50 JR combined.

Moto 3 brought us Open class, Schoolboy 1, Open C, and 200 C. Cole Forbes was the runaway winner in moto 1 gapping the next closest rider, Robert Weiss by 1:40. Ranger “Danger” Emmons came in 3rd finishing just one second ahead of Tyler Toms. The second moto was a different story. While Cole Forbes still won by nearly 2 minutes (1:59), it was David Redman and Van McCarren finishing second and third, respectively in both the Open Class and Overall. The combined moto results were 1- Cole Forbes, 1st Open Class 2- Robert Weiss, 1st School Boy 1 3- Van McCarren, 2nd Open Class. Rafael Rodriguez Ramos Gonzaga won Open C, and Ashton Bishop won 200 C.

With the 85 SR, both 65 classes (SR & JR) and Girls (12-16) in staging the green flag dropped on Moto 4. Carter Przemelewski was the class of the field in the first moto finishing 1:08 ahead of second place overall finisher and top 65 SR rider, Mason Tsakanikas. Mason Hansen in 85 SR came across the line in 3rd place. The podium for the second moto was a carbon copy of the first so the combined results saw Przemelewski in 1st, Tsakanikas 2nd and Hansen 3rd. Tanner Emmons took the top spot for 65 JR and Mikayla Nye won the Girls class.

With the first set of motos complete it was time to start the afternoon motos. First up was Moto 9 featuring Vet A, College Boy, Super Senior A, Vet B, Super Senior B and Women’s B classes. SXCS head scoring official Andrew Tsakanikas was on the front line and when the green flag dropped none of the other racers saw him again unless they were being lapped. Andrew crossed the line in first, Justin Lafferty second and Tyler Hayes third. Moto 2 was a different story. Andrew crashed out on the first lap, colliding with a tree, snapping a brake line and later seen limping back to the scorers area to get back to his “day job.” Justin Lafferty laid down the 4 fastest laps in the moto to win Moto 2 with Robie Leese Jr second and David Redman third. That was also the order of the combined results. Robie Leese Jr won Vet A, Justin Lafferty won College Boy, Kenny Hawkins won Super Senior A, Mark Maloney won Vet B, Mitch Piper won Super Senior B and Morgan Elrick won Women’s B.

The largest field of the day was in Moto 10 with 250 C, Vet C, Senior C, Super Senior C, Masters and Women’s C. Moto 10 was cut short due to a scary moment on the first lap. Seeing racer Scott Robinson collapse on the track unconscious, fellow racer Brian Audet, course worker Richie Brooks and sweep rider AW DeMott rushed to his aid. The trio performed chest compressions until EMTs could arrive. Scott posted the following on Facebook Tuesday night “Hi Brian…I want to say thank you for saving my life yesterday at the race.” I understand they have since spoken on the phone and Brian states “Dude is a bad ass and a fighter.”

In the shortened Moto 1 Ashton Bishop picked up the win with Ian Lau second and Camm Layne third. In moto 2 Camm Layne took the lead on the second lap and never gave it up with Ashton Bishop second and Ian Lau third. In the combined results Ashton Bishop was first, Camm Layne second and Ian Lau third, both in the overall and 250 C classes. Douglas Crosby got the overall win in Vet C finishing 2, 2. Senior C winner Mauricao Del Castillo went 1, 1 in his motos as did Super Senior C winner Jim Hayes and Masters winner Mike McCarren. Amber Smith won the Women’s C class going 2, 1.

In Moto 11 Justin Lafferty lead start to finish in the first moto with Cole Forbes coming in second and Earl Luhn III in third. In the second moto Lafferty was once again uncatchable but Earl Luhn III was able to catch Cole Forbes on the final lap to finish in front of him by 2 seconds. In the combined moto results it was Lafferty 1, Luhn III 2 and Forbes 3. Lafferty was the Pro/AA winner, Luhn III won Open A, Van McCarren won 250 A, Christian Winkler won 200 A, Sarah Baldwin won Women’s Pro and Cole Forbes won Schoolboy 2.

The final classes of the day started Moto 12. Cole Forbes was on the track once again after a very brief breather and finished the first moto in 1st place followed by Jacob Thomas in 2nd and Kenny Hawkins 3rd. The second moto found Forbes and Thomas once again 1, 2 while Austin McNamee took third. The combined moto results were also Forbes 1, Thomas 2 and McNamee 3. Kenny Hawkins won Senior A, Jacob Thomas won Open B, Dustin Mayo won 250 B, Cole Forbes won 200 B, Dan Dietrich won Senior B, and Joseph Wagaman took the Vintage 1998 and older win.

Carter Przemelewski took the Youth Ironman win with his 85 SR win, 3rd in Super Mini Jr, 6th in Schoolboy 1.

Cole Forbes was the Adult Ironman winner scoring 1st place finishes in Open, Schoolboy 2 and 200 B. ***Forbes was one to watch as he was FULL THROTTLE all day – he logged a total of 28 laps in 2:48:24 – Cole also ran the 1st Moto in Super Mini Sr – proving himself to be a beast of endurance and speed!
