TRAIL PROS, Sprint Cross Country Series (SXCS) was founded by Billy and Nancy Schlag with the intentions to bring more crossover racing to the Mid-Atlantic region. Billy, a lifelong motocrosser – with an extensive resume as an amateur and then moving through the Pro ranks didn’t give off-road much consideration early on. It actually wasn’t until 2013 he finally acquired a taste for off-road. Spending more time, getting properly set up led to really enjoying it… Looking back now he wishes he had started off-road earlier because he feels it has made him a better overall rider and the experiences have been incredibly rewarding.

In off-road, Billy is a multi-time Grand National Cross Country Series and Full Gas Sprint Enduro Series Champion.

WITH SXCS I’M HOPING TO BLEND THE TWO DISCIPLINES TOGETHER GIVING RACERS AN OPPORTUNITY TO EXPAND THEIR RACE EXPERIENCE

In 2016 the couple held their first race – an iconic event that had been going on since the sixties…the “Hangover Hare Scramble”. It was a race usually held by various clubs at different locations over the years and in 2016 it wasn’t on any schedules so Schlag went forward and decided to give it a go. A trail and track builder by trade it was an epic success crafting a nearly 10 miles course. After three years of promoting the Hangover Hare Scramble as well as a lot of consideration, the decision was made to create the Sprint Cross Country Series (SXCS) for 2019 with the Hangover Hare Scramble being RND 1!

What Make Us Different?

>SXCS stands out because we are innovators in the sport! We aren’t interested in going with the flow – or thinking if something hasn’t been done before that it can’t be done! We are a unique series – that being said, our series is the 1st in the Country to offer three different disciplines within a Championship! If you race our series you will experience what its like to race endurance races as well as sprint races – as well as a blend of a little moto! We want to keep our racers engaged!

Our three formats are:

Cross Country: Cross Country racing will be your typical Hare Scramble Off-Road event… With a wide variety of terrain; encompassing woods, fields and sometimes even motocross tracks. The courses will range anywhere from 6 miles to 13 miles except the youth courses will be shorter. The Micro (4-6, 7-8 yr old) and Trail Bike (7-11 yr old) and the new 65cc NOVICE class races will be 45 minutes long, Youth races will be 1 hour long, C Adult races are 1 1/2 hour long and Pro/A/B will run for 2 hours.

GP: GP racing is a mix of motocross along with fast and flowy portions of a cross country course. There will be two 30 minute motos for adults and two 20 minute motos for youth riders which will be combined to get your overall score.

Sprint Cross or Sprint Enduro: Consists of a “Cross Test” which will be a fast and flowy natural terrain course of about 2 – 3 miles long… nothing slow about it and a “Woods Test” which will be approximately 3 miles. Sprint Cross is not head to head racing – it is the simplest form of racing… you are racing the clock. You do not need to time keep – your transponder will do that. You will alternate between both tests…the lowest time of the day wins.

>All SXCS Race Courses are designed by TRAIL PROS – so you can be assured that the courses are not only designed with safety and sustainability in mind – they are designed to be fun, engaging and most of all to flow! Since Billy is a current racer he has a keen understanding for how the course should be laid out for the best race experience possible!

>The SXCS Crew are devised of an amazing group of life-long racers and advocates of the sport. From track prep – registration – scoring and announcing and everything in-between… Each one of them bring a unique talent and experience to the series – we are unbelievably blessed to have such a talented and driven group of people involved and so are the participants of our series!

>WE CREATED THE “IRONMAN AWARD”

In Cross Country:  Top overall will be awarded for youth ironman  that races in the youth race at 9:30 (1 hour race) and then races in the class they qualify to be in for the morning race at 11:00 (1.5 hour race) Top overall will be awarded for the adult iron man that races in the morning race at 11:00 (1.5 hour race) and then races in a class they qualify to be in for the afternoon race at 1:30 (2 hour race).

The iron man award is available in the GP and Cross Country race formats for youth and adults. You must let sign up know you want to be in the running for Iron Man.

[Ironman Rules] Whoever completes the most laps in the shortest time wins the Iron Man award… depending on how many entries we have for this will determine how many places back we will award.

To qualify for these awards you must complete 2 laps per race.

In GP: Race 3 classes and you qualify for the “Iron Man Award”  Your 3rd class entry money will go to the Iron Man award purse. 100% of the purse will be paid out to those that qualify for the Iron Man awards. If you are (Pro) or (A) rider you will earn ca$h, if you are a (B) or (C) or (Youth) rider you will be sent a gift card since as an amateur rider you cannot receive cash awards.

[IronMan Rules] Whoever completes the most laps in the shortest time wins the IronMan Award… depending on how many entries we have for this will determine how many places back we will award.

This is another way to offer more prizes for everyone not just the Pro and A riders. Keep in mind this adds an endurance element to a sprint type format. It may not come down to the fastest racer but the one that was best though combined 3 hours of racing!

>Instructional Rider Clinics at select events we may offer Rider Clinics. Prior to race day Rider Clinics are something we started back in 2017 before the Hangover Hare Scramble. This is an excellent opportunity to get some seat time and gain some insight from experienced racers and then take those fresh skills to the race course the following day. We have an exciting line up of instructors both past and present champions with a long list of accomplishments in the sport and they are eager to share their experience with you! Clinics are not available at all of our events but will be noted on event flyers when applicable.

>THE TRAIL PROS/SXCS FUN DAY TRAIL RIDE! SXCS started the FUN DAY Trail Ride in 2019 – We wanted to offer a full weekend event for those that wanted to spend the entire weekend at the track… but we didn’t want our racing to be a 2 day event because we realize not everyone is off on Saturday. We make it possible for you to ride the day before the race on a prepared and marked course (this is not the race course – or if it is it will be run backwards as to not give any advantages). This is a great way to get some seat time and dial in your bike before the race day – and also a great opportunity for those to that simply want to ride to come out and be a part of it all! The Trail Ride is usually four hrs long and is a great way to meet others and have a good ol’ fashioned time!

>SXCS is for Racers BY Racers – we are current racers many top level and we know what you expect and our goal is to exceed your expectations. We want you to feel a part of our community and grow with us!

>SXCS welcomes the opinions of our race family! We want to hear from you – if you have a suggestion, idea or comment please don’t hesitate to reach out to our team – we welcome your input!

We want to be a part of growing the sport for the future and we’re looking forward to making this happen – expanding and encouraging the rider base in the Mid-Atlantic Region. If you have a property or know of someone who may be interested in having an SXCS event please contact us.
