The 2023 Hangover Hare Scramble didn’t disappoint… While it may have been brisk, the riding conditions were favorable and made for great racing throughout all classes.
The weekend started with the classic SXCS Family Fun Ride – a 4-mile prepped trail for all to enjoy and prepare for the upcoming race day. While it was pretty chilly – it was all smiles on the trail ride – we had a great group of riders at all skill levels enjoying the day. The dirt started off a little slick but once the trail had some traffic on it – it really broke in nicely and was an absolute blast to turn some laps on!
Once the Trail Ride ended it was time for our future rippers to strut their stuff in the Strider and Stacyc Exhibition – but not before they cited the Pledge of Allegiance (so cool – no kneeling at SXCS)! These little ones had a blast turning lap after lap! You can’t help but smile and enjoy watching the older kids cheer and encourage them! As usual we had Andrew at the ready with flags and banter – it was another fun time with the littles!
At 6pm it was time for the Hangover Hare Scramble Chili Cook-off! We had six participants, and our judges took this very serious! There were all types of Chilies and – it was truly hard to decide between them but in the end our podium was filled by Derek Hahn in 1st place (he explained how he and his wife were up all-night prepping) Their Chili was all beef – no beans and it was GREAT! In 2nd place was Maura Tsakanikas with her Sausage Chili – when asked on the podium what the most important ingredient in her Chili was, she answered “LOVE”! Yup – can’t make that up!!! In 3rd place was Richie Brooks with his classic Van-Life Chili which included some spice balanced out with cheddar cheese and sour cream. There was truly NO BAD CHILI and we Thank Everyone for participating and look forward to the re-matches!
On Sunday – it’s all about the racing and who gets the worst of the weather – yes, the micros and youth racers! But I gotta say these kids are growing up tough and gritty and that will surely help them go far in the future! I’m pretty sure the temps were low 30’s and those tiny hands get COLD! The chilly weather didn’t stop our racers from turning up the heat on two-wheels because we had some great racing through all the micro and youth classes!

Morning Adult Racing is always super exciting at the Hangover Hare Scramble and this year was no different! We had over 200 C Riders in the lineup, and they were all raring to go at the drop of the green flag! This year the dirt was prime! Anyone that stayed home for this race really missed out on a crazy fun course and dirt that was so👌to say the least! I am also happy to report the level of comradery and sportsmanship was noticeable in both the morning and afternoon racing – Thank you racers for being so upstanding! It just simply goes a long way and helps people that are new to racing feel accepted and excited to race!
On top of the morning leaderboard was Juniors 1 racer Ryder Sigety. Ryder was on an 85cc bike and made a lot of passes. He also raced in the youth race and ended up the SXCS Youth Ironman! Check out his video HERE! Here is a list of our winners in the morning division:

Afternoon Adults – The track was at its most technical for this group of eager racers. The morning classes wore the course in – the breaking bumps got bigger – the holes deeper but nothing could diminish that FUN-FACTOR! This Trail Pros course was pure fun – it had epic flow and had racers raving about it – finally we had a rain free weekend where we could enjoy the course the way it was intended!
Fighting his way through the Pro-Am class was Ethan Ficklin on his Kawasaki. Ethan looked strong throughout the race and found himself on the top box in Pro-Am. Rounding out the podium was, Owen Barnes in 2nd and Jacob Thomas in 3rd.
Special Shout-out to Open A Racer, JOCELYN BARNES who finished 3rd in Open A and 10th Overall! Jocelyn wasn’t playing around – she was hard charging and will be one to watch in the future.
Our IRONMAN was nonother than Freddy Bane! Freddy raced the morning adult race in the Open Class completing 4 laps and in the Open B class completing 5 laps – a total of 9 laps in 3:66:74.942! Now that’s getting some seat-time!! (We should mention he did that in Denim Overalls!!🤘
Check out a short video made by Dustin Kendall HERE – He would’ve captured the afternoon race, but he couldn’t resist getting out on the racecourse himself – so on a borrowed bike from our very own, AW and in standard work boots Dustin managed 5th in Open A and 35th Overall!
